I wrote Welcome the Butterfly when my sister finally succumbed to fibrillary astrocytoma (brain cancer) after hanging on for five years. I sang it at her funeral. It's the only time I've ever performed it live.

I invested a lot of soul searching in this project. Mainly, I challenged my Judeo-Christian heritage to explore other explanations, perspectives, and  possibilities.

The death of my sister (and life-long best friend), Debbie, shortly after the birth of my daughter, made me contemplate the ebb and flow of life and how we seem to be nothing more than transients on this planet. But where do we come from? And where do we go? It's funny, a ThD in eschatology didn't help much in answering these questions, but some warm summer evenings with my guitar and djembe opened up my mind to a number of alternatives I hadn't considered before.

Here's to you, Debbie. Wherever you are, I hope it's everything you ever dreamed of.

Debbie and I
